BARI
BASILICA OF ST. NICHOLAS

The Basilica that houses the relics of St. Nicholas stands majestically in the old city of Bari. The style is Romanesque, meaning that it has a massive and sober appearance, characteristic of Norman architecture. However, it should not be forgotten that it is not a church built from scratch, but a temple built on the area of the Catapano’s residence (the Greek-Byzantine governor of Southern Italy between 968 and 1071) and therefore with substantial reuse of material of the previous building. This is why even talented scholars have not found an agreement on the construction phases.
