Gallipoli, the beautiful city

Gallipoli, the beautiful city
Gallipoli, the beautiful city

La Città Bella, that kalè polis of the Greeks that opens to the sea in which it is set and to which it owes its history, is a city that welcomes and defends at the same time, is the port that from its bay has seen loads of oil that have illuminated the great European capitals, is the island that gave shelter and protection to those fleeing the raids on the mainland, is the proud city that has flanked Taranto and has opposed the Roman legions. Gallipoli has the smell of the sea and those who visit it can not disregard this symbiosis.

Detailed points during the itinerary

Gallipoli is divided into two distinct areas: the old village and the new city. The charming old town, with a castle and a wealth of 17th century noble churches and palaces, extends over an island connected to the mainland by a bridge.

The itinerary includes a visit to the Hellenic Fountain, the Church of the Canneto and entrance to the historic center; and then the Aragonese Castle, one of the examples of fortified castles of the fifteenth century, with the Rivellino surrounded by the sea; the Sant’Agata Cathedral, embellished with decorative elements of the Baroque repertoire, made of Lecce stone, inside rich in paintings and frescoes on the saints and on the martyr Sant’Agata; the Riviera dotted with several 16th century confraternity oratory churches (Church of San Francesco d’Assisi, Church of Purity, Church of the Most Holy Crucifix and of the Rosary). The visit ends with a tasting based on typical Salento products.
